CPU Cooler Types

In short, there are 2 types of CPU coolers that are currently in use: air CPUcoolers and liquid CPU coolers. There are several other technologies used forcooling but at this point, they aren’t available for the mass market.

Air CPU Coolers

Air CPU cooler is the simplest way of keeping your CPU from overheating.Decades after their invention, we’re still using them in our PCs. Why? Becausethey work very efficiently and require little power. Air CPU coolers work bydriving cool airflow around the heatsink in order to cool it continuously asit is being heated by the CPU.When high-quality air CPU coolers are paired with top-notch PC cases, you haveyourself a highly-potent combination that will allow you to overclock in peaceand quiet.

Liquid CPU Coolers

Liquid CPU coolers weren’t available to the public until the late 90’s, butinnovative techies were making their own liquid cooling systems prior to that;mainly out of the aquarium and automotive parts. Fortunately for you and me,they’ve since become commercially available.Liquid coolers are popular for a few reasons: performance, wow-factor, andnoise level. As far as performance goes, it isn’t necessarily better than agood air cooling system, it’s just an alternative option.A liquid cooling system is comprised of one or more water blocks, a radiator,a pump, and a small internal fan. The liquid is pumped from the block throughthe tubing, transferring heat away from the motherboard, CPU, etc. This ispossible because of the high thermal capacity of the liquid used in thesesystems. The details of how the liquid is forced into a turbulent flow as opposed tolaminar flow to increase heat transfer are a bit tricky but interesting. Ifyou’d like to learn more about the physics of liquid cooling, the followingarticle “Air Cooling vs. Liquid Cooling” is a great resource.

CPU Cooler Designs

So far, we’ve covered the different types of CPU Coolers, how they work, etc.but we haven’t talked about CPU Cooler orientation within the case; which is avery important part of how they function.

Tower Style CPU Coolers

This type of a CPU cooler can be installed in two different positions, each ofwhich provides its own set of pros and cons. The first position pulls air fromthe front of the case to the back and integrates a vertical heatsink. Thesecond position pulls air from around the CPU, pushing it directly across thevideo card area and out through the top.To learn more about the differences in orientation for Tower CPU Coolers, check this article.

A Bit Bulky CPU Cooler Made for High Performance

For everyone looking for a cooler that offerspremium performanceand overall proper value for the money (although it is expensive), be quiet!BK022 Dark Rock Pro 4 comes as a reasonable option. High-quality buildcombined with its imposing design makes this cooler a welcome part of anyserious PC configuration – of course, if you can fit it in, since it hasrather large dimensions. On the other hand, this cooler is easy to install and has two Silent Wings PWMfans (one 120mm and one 135mm) that have a maximum speed of 1200RPM and offeralmost no sound action. It also has seven heat pipes made out of copper, fortop-class heat dissipation and comes with a decent 3-year warranty. In otherwords, everything you would expect from a cooler of this class is there.A minor problem is its weight and the already mentioned dimensions, but otherthan that, if you want a top of the chart performance, be quiet! BK022 DarkRock Pro 4 is the right choice.Pros: * Build quality * Quiet * Exceptional performanceCheck Prices

A Large Liquid CPU Cooler with Performance that will Blow You Away, as

Will the PriceIf its size isn’t a problem, Thermaltake Floe Triple Riing RGB 360 can be avery helpful tool in restraining your CPU temps. With the help of the 360mmradiator that is equipped with three 120mm fans, with a rotational speed of500-1400RPM and attractive RGB lighting, this cooler presents a greatcombination of performance (similar to the best 280mm radiator coolers) and acompelling appearance.Thermaltake Floe Triple Riing RGB 360 is relatively easy to install, it iscompatible with most Intel and AMD sockets and it comes with the TT RGB Plussoftware dedicated for the full control over its lighting and synchronizationwith other components.Unluckily, its price tag makes it not really affordable, but on the otherhand, if you want a premium performance, the lowest possible noise levels anda great appearance, that has its cost. Overall, if you have a large enoughcase, demand for a great performance and enough money to buy it, go for it –you won’t be disappointed.Pros: * Silent * Quality cooling * RGB lightingCheck Prices

A Solid, Well-Balanced Liquid Cooling System

If you are after a good-quality liquid CPU cooler that will give you a goodmixture of price, RGB lighting, andthermal performance, CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML240L RGB V2 is the device for you. However, have in mind that this product won’t blow you away in any category. It is good and it will satisfy a large base of users, but don’t expectmiracles, or it will deliver the same level of thermal performance as thetwice more expensive cooling systems, such as, Kraken X63for example becauseit won’t.Nevertheless, it will offer low noise levels (between 8 and 27dBA), twolighting zones, and an included RGB controller, as well as good compatibilitythat allows for its easy pairing with all more mainstream-oriented sockets.CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML240L RGB V2 is fitted with two new SickleFlow120mm RGB fans, with a life expectancy of 160,000 hours; it has a two-yearwarranty and overall presents a fairly balanced cooling system, whichrightfully positions itself among the best liquid cooling systems in themainstream range.Pros: * It comes in a package with the included wired RGB controller * Two lighting zones * Low noise levels * A solid build quality * Affordable * Easy to useCons: * Not the best thermal performanceCheck Prices

System Hardware Component: Cooling system in a Computer

As we all know that the electronic things produce heat because of powerconsumption. Similarly in the computer system, the CPU, VGA card and all theother electronic chips produce heat and as a result it effects the speed andperformance of the system. If the heat is not removed then there are chancesof the processor and other components to be damaged permanently. So in orderto keep the internal temperature of the system low, the cooling system isprovided and fixed to it. All computer systems today come with some coolingsystems to reduce and remove heat.Figure: Fan Cooling systemThere are basically two types of cooling systems used in the computer systemand they are:

Air Cooling

The parts inside most computers are cooled by air moving through the case.Similarly for the CPU cooling, the heat sink with a fan fixed to it isattached to the flat area of the CPU in order to cover maximum surface area. The heat sink basically consists of the Aluminum fins spread in the rows and afan is attached at the top or side of the metal fins. The fan push the air tothe heat sink and the hot air in the sink expands and comes out of the sinkand then it is pushed to outside of the case through case cooling system. As aresult, the temperature of the CPU doesn’t exceed. The following figure shows the CPU Air cooling system.Figure: Air Cooling system of the CPU
